OMG – making it easier to find food hygiene ratings
Omgomg.co.uk is a website that uses data from the FSA website to allow people to easily find out about food businesses close by when deciding where to eat.
Using your location settings, it will show you your 50 closest rated food businesses. Unlike the official site, it also shows previous ratings – not just the most recent. Facebook users can upload photos of the business and/or food and rate it themselves.
The reports feature is particularly revealing with the most recent 0 ratings (today’s shame) and the most recent 5 ratings (today’s fame) shown. With a section for High Street Failures, it’s also possible to see which branches of your favourite chains to avoid.
Omgomg.co.uk is causing a stir amongst environmental health officers as it also rates their performance. It points out that although a considerable amount of money is spent by councils to check and rate premises, a lot of councils are not publishing the information in a timely manner meaning that:
- delays in publishing bad reports may put the public at risk
- delays in publishing good reports can harm a business’s trade
Each council is graded out of 100 according to the time between visiting and uploading the rating and according to the age of the data (penalising those with food businesses not visited in the last two years).
