New Health and Safety Consultants Register set to clean up the industry
From February 2011, the Government have tasked the HSE plans to set up a web-based directory of approved health and safety consultants. Businesses will be able to check this directory to find consultants who meet the highest standards. The Government believes the UK ‘compensation culture’ is in part being fed by poorly qualified health and safety consultants introducing fears of hazards which are not serious or unlikely to occur. This is leading to increased costs on businesses – especially those whose insurance policies require them to seek external expertise. Chartered members of the CIEH (Chartered Institute of Environmental Health) IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) and REHIS (Royal Environmental Institute of Health of Scotland) will be eligible immediately to go on this register. This is because Chartered Members have already had to prove that they are suitably qualified and that they are keeping their knowledge up-to-date.We support this move as we have clients that have previously chosen a ‘cheaper’ option when seeking health and safety support only to find that it costs them more in the long run. Safer Food Scores health and safety consultants are either chartered members of one of these professional bodies or are closely supervised by a client manager who is.
