
How To Arrange Workplace Testing For COVID-19
It is estimated that 1 in 3 people with COVID-19 do not show any symptoms and it is for this reason that the Government have opened up workplace testing for businesses in England. The aim is to identify those who are infected in order to break the chains of transmission in the community.
Who can register?
Businesses registered in England that have 50 or more employees.
What about other businesses?
For businesses with less than 50 employees, people without symptoms can still apply for a free test however they should book this through their local authority via this link Find out if your area offers rapid lateral flow test sites – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
For businesses in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland you are advised to go to the relevant public health website on testing for COVID-19 for further information.
How do we organise the workplace testing?
- Firstly register your companies interest here: https://www.gov.uk/get-workplace-coronavirus-tests
- An email will be sent from the relevant government department to invite you to a series of webinars
- An invitation will then be sent to enable you to begin to read/download guidance documents
What test method is being used and is it free?
Rapid lateral flow testing kits will be provided to you free of charge. These kits give a result within 30 minutes and do not need to be sent to a laboratory.

What happens if an employee tests positive?
Any person testing positive is legally obliged to self-isolate immediately. They do NOT need to have an additional PCR test to confirm the positive result.
If we carry out work place testing, does this mean we no longer need to follow our COVID-19 precautions?
No, all COVID-19 precautions that have been put in place as required by your risk assessment should remain in place. In particular, social distancing requirements must still be adhered to.
